One of the most spectacularly sited small cities in Italy, Orvieto sits high on its ‘plug’ of volcanic tufa rock looking down on a river valley. The town is immersed in the gently rolling hills of Umbria, a region justly known as the green heart of Italy.
Orvieto is roughly half way between Rome and Florence and is conveniently close to the central A1 motorway and main Rome-Milan train line. Being so central it is an ideal base to explore the other major sights of Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio.
Orvieto is a charming and easy place to wander around with many picturesque small alleyways and intimate piazzas to explore. It also has more than its fair share of excellent restaurants to suit every pocket with a wealth of local Umbrian specialities
1 - EASY TO REACH FROM ROME
Whether you want to use public transport or hire a car, Orvieto is easy to reach from both Rome airports. If you don’t like the idea of hiring a car or using buses you need have no worries when you land at Rome airport as you can do your entire journey by train.
There are several trains a day that take only 1h from Rome central station. On arriving at Orvieto station there is a pleasant 5 minute funicular ride that takes you directly from the station up to the historic centre of town. Alternatively, we can arrange private transport for you and your party. By car Orvieto sits conveniently just 10 minutes drive from the Orvieto exit of the main A1 motorway about an hour and a half drive from the airports.
2 - CENTRAL POSITION TO VISIT OTHER TOWNS
Orvieto is centrally located on the Italian peninsula in the region of Umbria. It is conveniently situated close to the main A1 autostrada that links Rome and Florence as well as being on the central railway route with fast trains to many major cities. There are frequent fast trains to Rome and Florence and by road it is easy to explore many of the major sights in Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio in a day such as Rome, Florence, Siena, Perugia, Assisi, Arezzo although a day is hardly enough to do them justice. As well as the larger cities there are many smaller gems to visit such as Todi, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Pienza and Spoleto. With so much to see many people decide to add a few days before or after the wedding to take the opportunity to visit these exceptional cities and towns as well as exploring the lovely countryside which offers some of the most stunning scenery in Europe.
